Batakrishna Pal’s Jagadhatri Puja

Bonedi Bari

Batakrishna Pal’s ancestral house was situated in Shibpur of Howrah district, where Durga Puja is a rather popular annual celebration. There Lakshmi Durga is worshipped. Over time, this devout reverent of Devi decided to move to the bustling chattel of Calcutta, in 1855 and set up his medicine shop in Shovabazar area. And immediately he began to participate actively in Jagadhatri Pujo celebrations too. In that manner, Batakrishna Pal began to make not only medicines at his place of work but also typical ornaments worn by Hindu women of Bengal like the pious bhikha ras-sindur-tika – small mark on the forehead symbolising victory over sin – which he did very well! Jagachitra or cloth used as background behind Jagadhatri image is made purely out of copper and had both gold and silver platings as prepared by B.K.Pal Company (owner: Batakrishna Pal).
