Fatakesto Kali Puja

Central Kolkata Heritage

It is said that without change there can be no progress. Still, you might be surprised with how some popular traditions remain unchanged in India. For example, take the North Kolkata’s famous “Fata Keshtor Kali Puja.” You could even say it has remained the same since 1957—the Kali Puja started by a Congress strongman then. Krishna Chandra Dutta took it upon himself to start the festivities and uphold them when he died in 1992. Prabandha Roy inherited her uncle’s role as head of organizer for the festival and has now proudly taken over as head of this historical event for more than 50 years now.
