Hatibagan Sarbojonin, a legendary Durga Puja committee located in North Kolkata, has unveiled an evocative theme
for Durga Puja 2025 titled “Athho Ghat Kotha” (The Story of the Endless Ghats). This theme draws deep inspiration from the historic ghats along the Hooghly River, once vibrant cultural hubs that hosted theatrical performances, wrestling matches, bustling social gatherings, and spiritual rituals but now stand neglected and fading from public memory.
Theme and Artistic Vision
The pandal is transformed into a visual narrative that recreates the timeless charm and the lingering melancholy of Kolkata’s riverine heritage. The design captures the essence of the Ganga ghats’ significance—spiritual devotion, artistic vibrancy, and community life—with a blend of contemporary and traditional artistry.
This year’s artwork is a collaboration of renowned Kolkata artist Tapas Dutta and French artist Thomas Henriot, known for his mystical ink-and-brush technique. Henriot’s panoramic mural complements Dutta’s ability to integrate cultural narratives with modern aesthetics, presenting the ghats as living memory rather than mere relics.
Celebrations and Inauguration
The Durga Puja at Hatibagan Sarbojonin was inaugurated by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on September 20, 2025, marking the official start of festivities. The inauguration emphasized cultural preservation and the importance of heritage awareness. The theme received praise for its thoughtful portrayal of Kolkata’s forgotten heritage and its call to revive the soul of the city’s ghats.
The pandal’s atmosphere is enhanced by symbolic lighting, heritage wall sketches, and monochrome backdrops contrasting with the vibrant idol of Maa Durga, symbolizing faith’s triumph in challenging times.
Public Reception and Cultural Significance
The “Athho Ghat Kotha” theme resonates powerfully with both locals and tourists, who appreciate the blend of cultural nostalgia and artistic innovation. Visitors have commented on the pandal’s immersive feel, its storytelling strength, and how it fosters a renewed sense of pride in Kolkata’s evolving urban identity.
The theme also opens conversations about urban conservation, cultural heritage, and community memories, making Hatibagan Sarbojonin’s Durga Puja not just a religious celebration but a cultural dialogue.
